Health and Social Care

At Old Buckenham High School, KS4 students can choose to study Health and Social Care.

Students study for the OCR Cambridge National Certificate in Health and Social Care Level 1 or Level 2.

Students should consider studying this course if they have an interest in a career in caring professions including, health care, social care, teaching, early years, the criminal justice system and the armed forces. The care sector is the biggest employment sector in the UK and this course allows students to explore the role it plays in the health, well-being and care of individuals of all ages.

This course introduces students to the specialist knowledge and skills needed to work in the care sector. There is a particular focus on the rights of service users, person-centred values, effective communication and the procedures and measures used to protect individuals such as safeguarding, hygiene and security.

Guided by our core values of community, ambition and respect, students develop a range of transferable skills through this course including the ability to empathise with others, communicate effectively, work as a team, make informed decisions, and analyse and evaluate information.

This course is assessed through three units of study -

Unit 1 (RO32) Principles of care in health and social care settings. In this unit you will learn about the importance of the rights of service users, person-centred values and how to apply them. You will also learn about the importance of effective communication skills when providing care and support for service users in health and social care settings and the procedures and measures used to protect individuals such as safeguarding, hygiene and security. This is assessed through a 1 hour 15 minute written paper which is worth 40% of your overall grade and is externally assessed in the summer of Y11.

Unit 2 (RO33) Supporting individuals through life events. In this unit you will learn about life stages and the factors that affect them. You will understand expected and unexpected life events and the impact they will have on physical, social/emotional and socio-economic aspects in an individual’s life. You will research the service providers and practitioners that can support individuals, recommend support and justify how this will meet the needs of a specific individual. This unit is worth 30% of your overall grade and is internally assessed in the spring of Y10.

Unit 3 (RO34) Creative and therapeutic activities. In this unit you will learn about a range of creative activities and therapies that are available in health, and social care settings and understand the physical, intellectual, emotional and social benefits of these. You will learn how to plan and deliver a creative activity with an individual or group and evaluate your planning and delivery. This unit is worth 30% of your overall grade and is internally assessed in the spring of Y11.
