Personal Development and Careers
At Old Buckenham High School, Personal Development (PD) is a vital part of our curriculum. It’s not just about academic achievement; it's about developing well-rounded, responsible, and ambitious individuals who are ready to make positive contributions to society. Our PD programme incorporates PSHE,Citizenship, and Religious Education (RE), ensuring that students have the knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive in both school and life.
Guided by our core values of Community, Ambition, and Respect, our PD curriculum encourages students to explore important topics that promote personal well-being, social responsibility, and ethical thinking. By engaging with these subjects, students are better prepared to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the values that help them become responsible citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world.
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)
PSHE at OBHS is about empowering students to make informed decisions about their lives. We cover a broad range of topics that support their emotional, social, and physical well-being, including mental health, healthy relationships, online safety, and financial literacy. PSHE encourages self-reflection, resilience, and empathy, helping students develop the skills they need to navigate life’s challenges.
Citizenship
In Citizenship, students explore the structures of society, the law, democracy, and their rights and responsibilities as active citizens. They develop a deep understanding of how they can make a difference in the world around them, whether that’s through volunteering, being an informed voter, or advocating for change. Our Citizenship programme fosters a sense of social responsibility and encourages students to think critically about the issues facing their communities and the world.
Religious Education (RE)
RE at OBHS provides students with the opportunity to explore fundamental questions of meaning, belief, and ethical values. We examine different world religions, philosophies, and ethical frameworks to foster an appreciation of diversity and respect for others. Through RE, students are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs, as well as develop a deeper understanding of the beliefs and practices of others. This subject plays a key role in building tolerance, respect, and an appreciation of different cultural perspectives.
Careers Education
Preparing students for the future is central to our Personal Development programme. Careers Education at OBHS ensures that students are aware of the wide range of opportunities available to them. We offer tailored guidance and support to help students make informed choices about their future careers, whether they choose to pursue further education, apprenticeships, or enter the workforce directly.
Through a mix of lessons, guest speakers, career workshops, and one-on-one guidance, students are encouraged to explore their interests, strengths, and ambitions. Our careers programme also includes practical advice on writing CVs, preparing for interviews, and navigating the changing world of work.
Additionally, students are introduced to various career pathways in fields such as engineering, healthcare, the arts, business, and technology, to name just a few. Through work placements, employer visits, and career fairs, students are able to gain first-hand insight into the world of work and build the skills they need to succeed.
