How to Help Yourself Learn

How to Help Yourself Learn – The OBHS Way

Tips to make learning easier, smarter, and more successful

At Old Buckenham High School, we want to help you become a brilliant young person. That means working hard, being kind, and learning how to learn. Below are some top tips that we teach in school — and they really work!

The best part? You can use them at home too.

1 - Build a Routine

Having a regular routine helps your brain get into learning mode.

Try to set times for homework or revision each day

Don’t overdo it – a little bit every day works better than loads all at once

Don’t forget to plan in time for fun and rest too!

Write down your routine and share it with home – you're much more likely to stick to it if others know what you’re aiming for!

2 - Sleep Well

Sleep is powerful. It helps your brain remember what you've learned.

Aim for 8–10 hours of sleep each night

Avoid screens for an hour before bed

No energy drinks or caffeine in the afternoon or evening

Try using an alarm clock instead of your phone

3 - Avoid Distractions

The fewer distractions, the better your focus.

Keep your phone in another room while you study

Avoid music or TV in the background

Set up a space that’s just for learning if you can

Give tempting things like your phone, games controllers or remote to someone else while you work – it’s much easier to focus when they’re out of reach!

4 - Praise Your Effort, Not Just Results

Trying your best is always something to be proud of.

Working hard matters more than being perfect

People who keep trying get better over time – that’s called a growth mindset

Dont be afraid to make mistakes they help you learn!

5 - Space Out Your Learning

Spreading your practice over time helps you remember more.

Instead of cramming, do short bits of revision often

For example, 20 minutes a day for a week is better than 2 hours the night before a test

6 - Test Yourself – It Works!

The best way to learn is to try and remember something without looking.

Cover it up and try to recall it (then check!)

Ask someone to test you – it’s how your brain grows stronger

Use the OBHS core questions with the technique look, say, cover, write, check

7 - Use the OBHS Study Tools

We teach lots of powerful ways to learn. Here are a few we recommend:

Flashcards

Brain dumps (writing down everything you know on a topic)

Mind maps

Self-quizzing

They really do work — but only if you use them properly and often!
