English

At Old Buckenham High School, English lies at the heart of everything we do. Through reading, writing, speaking and listening, our students develop the skills, confidence and curiosity they need to understand the world—and find their place in it.

Guided by our core values of Community, Ambition and Respect, the English curriculum aims to inspire a lifelong love of literature and language. Students explore a wide range of texts from across time, place and culture—developing empathy, critical thinking, and the ability to articulate ideas clearly and creatively.

From Shakespeare to contemporary poetry, from persuasive writing to storytelling, our pupils are challenged to read deeply, write purposefully, and speak with confidence. We value every voice and encourage students to express themselves with accuracy, insight and originality.

Our peaceful rural location in Old Buckenham gives students the space to reflect, question and grow. English lessons provide the tools to access every other subject and to engage meaningfully in society beyond school. We see literacy not just as a skill, but as a gateway to opportunity.

Beyond the classroom, English thrives through enrichment opportunities such as book clubs, creative writing workshops, theatre visits and national competitions. These experiences deepen learning and foster confidence, collaboration and cultural understanding.
