Key Stage 3

How students are grouped in Year 8

Students have Art, Drama, English, Geography, History, Music, ICT and RE in five groups called Sapphire, Pearl, Diamond, Emerald and Topaz. Students in Sapphire also remain in this group for MFL.

Sapphire is a group where students tend to have stronger literacy skills and so would be expected to make slightly faster progress. Pearl, Diamond, Emerald and Topaz are parallel mixed ability groups.

In Maths students are set by ability. Sets 1 and 2 are taught at the same time and sets 3, 4 and 5 are taught at the same time. Maths sets 1 and 2 become two Citizenship groups. Maths sets 3, 4 and 5 are regrouped to make three Citizenship groups.

In MFL groups Pearl and Emerald are taught at the same time as are Diamond and Topaz. This allows MFL to regroup these groups into upper and lower groups.

In Technology Sapphire and Pearl are regrouped as three teaching groups. Opal, Emerald and Topaz are similarly grouped as four teaching groups. Similarly in Science Sapphire and Pearl are regrouped as two Science groups and Diamond, Emerald and Topaz make three Science groups.
